Rabbi Judah Loew
Creator of the Golem of Prague
Rabbi Judah Loew (1526?-1609) is most famous as the leader of the Prague Jewish community who created the Golem to protect local Jews. An incredible Jewish scholar and philosopher with a wide range of interests (including astronomy), his Talmudic commentaries and writings on Jewish mysticism are considered essential works of the era, making him one of the most famous rabbis who ever lived. He was the leader of the Altneuschul (Old-New Synagogue) in Prague, where legend has it he stored the pieces of the Golem in the attic. He is buried across the street in Prague’s Jewish cemetery and is a national folk hero of the Czech Republic.
